    The Impact of Multi-layered Data-blocks on Controller Performance

    As a consequence of the push to increase National Airspace System capacity, air traffic control displays will not only have to show the increasing number of aircraft, but also all the associated data such as airspeed and altitude. The representation of aircraft data and associated relational information, often superimposed on a map, leads to cluttered displays, which could negatively affect controller performance, especially as aircraft numbers increase. To investigate these issues further, an experiment was conducted that examined the effect of increasing data-block lines on controller performance in an aircraft vectoring task. Data-block design, the primary factor, varied in the number of lines displayed (2-5). In addition a data-block information priority factor was examined that addressed the frequency of information access across data-block lines. Results demonstrated that while task load, measured as an increasing number of planes under control, negatively influenced reaction times and task accuracy, the number of lines in a data block was not statistically significant. However there was a trend towards reduced performance when data-blocks exceeded more than three lines on a base layer. In addition, the data blocks that contained prioritized information across levels promoted faster reaction times, but at a cost of lower situation awareness. This research demonstrated that the design of data-blocks should consider the balance between reduction in data-block interaction time against the need to allow enough interaction time to build situation awareness.Civil Aerospace Medical Institut

    High-resolution photoemission spectroscopy and realistic ab-initio calculations have been employed to analyze the onset and progression of d-sp hybridization in Fe impurities deposited on alkali metal films. The interplay between delocalization, mediated by the free-electron environment, and Coulomb interaction among d-electrons gives rise to complex electronic configurations. The multiplet structure of a single Fe atom evolves and gradually dissolves into a quasiparticle peak near the Fermi level with increasing the host electron density. The effective multi-orbital impurity problem within the exact diagonalization scheme describes the whole range of hybridizations.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure

    Probing two topological surface bands of Sb2Te3 by spin-polarized photoemission spectroscopy

    Using high resolution spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we map the electronic structure and spin texture of the surface states of the topological insulator Sb2Te3. In combination with density functional calculations (DFT), we directly show that Sb2Te3 exhibits a partially occupied, single spin-Dirac cone around the Fermi energy, which is topologically protected. DFT obtains a spin polarization of the occupied Dirac cone states of 80-90%, which is in reasonable agreement with the experimental data after careful background subtraction. Furthermore, we observe a strongly spin-orbit split surface band at lower energy. This state is found at 0.8eV below the Fermi level at the gamma-point, disperses upwards, and disappears at about 0.4eV below the Fermi level into two different bulk bands. Along the gamma-K direction, the band is located within a spin-orbit gap. According to an argument given by Pendry and Gurman in 1975, such a gap must contain a surface state, if it is located away from the high symmetry points of the Brillouin zone. Thus, the novel spin-split state is protected by symmetry, too.Comment: 8 pages, 10 figure

    Magnetism and interlayer coupling in fcc Fe/Co films

    The magnetism of epitaxial fee Fe films deposited on Co(100) and sandwiched between two Co(100) films was investigated by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. The dependence of the Fe magnetism on the film thickness is complex and qualitatively similar on Co(100) and in fee Co/Fe/Co(100) trilayers. The fee Fe film magnetization presents a pronounced oscillation, suggesting a partial antiferromagnetic ordering in the 5-10 monolayer thickness range. The fee Fe films mediate an oscillatory, indirect coupling in Co/Fe/Co(100) structures that alternates in correspondence with the changes of the Fe magnetization

    Properties of continuous Fourier extension of the discrete cosine transform and its multidimensional generalization

    A versatile method is described for the practical computation of the discrete Fourier transforms (DFT) of a continuous function g(t)g(t) given by its values gjg_{j} at the points of a uniform grid FNF_{N} generated by conjugacy classes of elements of finite adjoint order NN in the fundamental region FF of compact semisimple Lie groups. The present implementation of the method is for the groups SU(2), when FF is reduced to a one-dimensional segment, and for SU(2)×...×SU(2)SU(2)\times ... \times SU(2) in multidimensional cases. This simplest case turns out to result in a transform known as discrete cosine transform (DCT), which is often considered to be simply a specific type of the standard DFT. Here we show that the DCT is very different from the standard DFT when the properties of the continuous extensions of these two discrete transforms from the discrete grid points tj;j=0,1,...Nt_j; j=0,1, ... N to all points t∈Ft \in F are considered. (A) Unlike the continuous extension of the DFT, the continuous extension of (the inverse) DCT, called CEDCT, closely approximates g(t)g(t) between the grid points tjt_j. (B) For increasing NN, the derivative of CEDCT converges to the derivative of g(t)g(t). And (C), for CEDCT the principle of locality is valid.     Recognition of antigen-specific B-cell receptors from chronic lymphocytic leukemia patients by synthetic antigen surrogates

    In patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), a single neoplastic antigen-specific B cell accumulates and overgrows other B cells, leading to immune deficiency. CLL is often treated with drugs that ablate all B cells, leading to further weakening of humoral immunity, and a more focused therapeutic strategy capable of targeting only the pathogenic B cells would represent a significant advance. One approach to this would be to develop synthetic surrogates of the CLL antigens allowing differentiation of the CLL cells and healthy B cells in a patient. Here, we describe nonpeptidic molecules capable of targeting antigen-specific B cell receptors with good affinity and selectivity using a combinatorial library screen. We demonstrate that our hit compounds act as synthetic antigen surrogates and recognize CLL cells and not healthy B cells. Additionally, we argue that the technology we developed can be used to identify other classes of antigen surrogates
